A seemingly small verse in Scripture has dramatically changed my life. In Leviticus 25:10 Moses writes:
Sanctify the fiftieth year; make it a holy year. Proclaim freedom all over the land to everyone who lives in it—a Jubilee for you: Each person will go back to his family’s property and reunite with his extended family. (MSG)
The Year of Jubilee is about confessing of sins so the people could celebrate great happiness and triumph. They found liberty from years of slavery. As I journaled my thoughts for this scripture, I realized how desperate I wanted to live my days with joy that stems from freedom. But how could I practically apply the Year of Jubilee into my daily life, my home, and with my people?
Friend, you and I can observe jubilee by practicing the daily ritual of repentance so that we can rejoice in the freedom that God so graciously gave us through the crucifixion. The Jubilee Journal is a simple tool to help you celebrate your people, place, and purpose.
Here’s how this journal works:
Scripture - Begin your time with writing down a key verse of scripture that applies to your day. Meditate on this verse, underline key phrases, and soak it up so that you can keep it with you throughout the day.
Journal - Take a few minutes to purge your thoughts in this space. Write about your people, place, and purpose: daily highlights/hardships, moments worth keeping, and the desires of your heart. When you start to journal your days actively, you will begin to recognize patterns that need to be broken so you can live liberated from bondage and unhealthy habits. Journaling also serves as a great reminder of God’s goodness, faithfulness, and protection over your days.
Confession - Permit yourself to confess to God the things that you are wrestling with in your soul. Be honest in this space and share your troubles, fears, doubts, and insecurities. This space is a place for you to connect yourself to Christ on the cross and repent so that you may feel clean, forgiven, and loved. Confession is a significant step to experiencing freedom.
Celebration - We intentionally designed this space to be the last part of your journaling experience. Make this a time of worship. Shout your praises to God for the work He has done in your life. Write words of affirmation to remind you that God sees you, knows you, and loves you. May this be a space of joy and hope, friend.
I've personally seen the benefits of using this journal throughout the year, and I pray that these four prompts will be a helpful source of reflection as you move throughout your days, weeks, and year. We are continually being invited to celebrate the freedom that Christ offers us so that we may live jubilantly. Let’s not wait fifty years to return home. Let’s start today.
A portion of proceeds from each sale of the Jubilee Journal will be donated to a local non-profit.
A jubilee is a special anniversary that people in the Old Testament of the Bible celebrated. During this celebration, all the people would return home to their family’s land and enjoy a great time of joy after years of slavery (Leviticus 25:10). The people were able to celebrate a whole year of jubilee because they talked to God through prayer. While they prayed, they asked God to forgive them of their sins, they prayed for their family and friends, and they thanked God for His great love. God heard their prayers and He hears your prayers too.
The Jubilee Journal for Kids can help you talk to God through prayer. Each day, you can fill in four blanks:
1. Bible Verse
In this space, write your Bible verse for the day. When we learn scripture from the Bible, it helps us know who God is and how He helps us.
2. Things I Need God’s Help With
Here, you can ask God for His help. Maybe you need help with homework, friends, or an emotion that you are feeling. Tell God what is on your heart.
3. Things I Can Pray For Others
Write down prayers that you have for your family, friends, community, and nation.
4. The Best Part of My Day
Share the best part of your day through drawing a picture or filling in the blank. Let this be a space for you to get creative!
Don’t forget to circle the month and the day at the bottom of the journal.
When we talk to God, we can better understand how much He loves us. In the New Testament of the Bible we learn that God loved us so much that He allowed His own son, Jesus, to die for our sins. God did this so His people could never feel like slaves again and know that our home is in heaven with Him.
You are a child of God and you are so loved! Celebrate God’s love by showing His love to others. Let this journal be a place for you to keep up with all of your prayers.
